February: Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Did you know? February is Teen Dating Violence (TDV) awareness month. Do you know what teen dating violence is? Let me explain for you. It can include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse or stalking. Did you know? More than 30% of teens (1 in 3 teens) in the US will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse by someone they are in a relationship with before they become adults.

Some of the signs to look for in your teen if they are experiencing abuse:

  • Signs of physical abuse (bruises)

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STI)

  • Signs of depression

  • Anxiety/worry

  • Failing grades

  • Drinking/drug use

  • Many, many more...

What you can do? Educate! It is important to educate your teen and yourself about the signs of teen dating violence, and what a healthy relationship looks like.

If you or someone you know may be experiencing teen dating violence, please reach out to DIAA crisis hotline: VP 319 531 7719. We are here to help you!
